YU – Sterling Memorial Library Fire Alarm Upgrade

This project involved fire protection and electrical engineering design for a complete fire alarm system upgrade at Yale University’s historic Sterling Memorial Library. The new system was designed to meet current code compliance while minimizing impact on the building’s architectural and historical features. CENTEK conducted existing condition assessments, developed code-compliant design documents, and ensured full adherence to Yale University Design Standards. Close coordination was maintained throughout design and construction with the Fire Alarm Vendor, Yale University Fire Marshal, and Facilities Department to ensure seamless integration and reliable life-safety performance.

YU – Payne Whitney Gym Fire Alarm Upgrade

This project involved fire protection and electrical engineering design to upgrade and unify three existing fire alarm systems within Yale University’s historic Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The scope included a new code-compliant system designed to consolidate legacy equipment into a single, modern platform while dramatically increasing notification coverage throughout the building. CENTEK provided existing condition assessments, full design documentation in accordance with Yale University Design Standards, and construction administration support. The design required close coordination with the Fire Alarm System Vendor and the Fire Marshal to ensure smooth implementation, compliance with current code requirements, and resolution of longstanding safety concerns—all within an active and highly occupied facility.

YU – Sage Bower Hall Interior Upgrades

This project involved MEP design for the renovation of eight interior spaces within Sage Bower Hall, a historic building on Yale University’s Old Campus. The scope included new HVAC equipment and controls integrated with the Building Management System (BMS), replacement of plumbing fixtures, and upgrades to electrical distribution, lighting, power, and telecommunications/data infrastructure. A key challenge was accommodating new ductwork, piping, and conduit routing within limited ceiling space and existing structural constraints while preserving the building’s historic character. Detailed coordination with the architect and structural team ensured all new systems were efficiently integrated and code compliant.

UNH – Bartels Marketplace Renovation
West Haven, CT
Client: University of New Haven, Apicella + Bunton Architects
This project involved MEP, structural, and fire protection design for the renovation of two kitchen and cooking areas within the Bartels Marketplace dining facility at the University of New Haven. The scope included new mechanical ventilation and exhaust systems, a dedicated fire suppression system with modifications to the existing sprinkler layout, new plumbing fixtures and piping, and upgrades to lighting, power distribution, and electrical connections serving cooking equipment. Structural design services were also provided for new framing and supports for the exhaust hood.

YU – Lawrence Hall Renovation

This project involved MEP and fire protection design for the renovation of Lawrence Hall, a student residence located on Yale University’s Old Campus. The scope included upgrades to interior suites and bathrooms, exterior masonry restoration, and installation of a new addressable fire alarm system. CENTEK provided full MEP engineering services, including replacement of outdated mechanical equipment, plumbing, radiant heating, and electrical systems throughout the building. Plumbing work involved new domestic booster pumps, steam water heaters, and separation of the existing combined sanitary and storm piping into independent systems. The HVAC scope included replacement of heat exchangers, radiant heating equipment, and associated steam and heating piping within the mechanical room. Fire protection design encompassed new sprinkler risers, distribution piping, and sprinkler heads to accommodate the renovated spaces. Electrical design included upgrades to panelboards, lighting, power receptacles, and telecommunications infrastructure to support the building’s modernization and new mechanical systems.
